Alpha Mather

Alpha Mather is a museum geared towards families with young children inspired by the history of Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento County. This branding approach balances education with excitement so that the museum does not appear overly childish but also not too serious or academic.

Design Solution

To kickstart the approach to this branding project, I studied aviation branding language, especially as it relates to the Air Force. I also looked through existing branding for children’s museums with interactive systems. I also explored historical military color palettes and their modern adaptations. The need for clarity, combined with energy to hold the attention of younger audiences, became apparent.

My logo system for Alpha Mather uses wing-like forms and horizontal motion created by stripes reminiscent of Air Force emblems to communicate flight. The color palette, slightly offset from the primary colors, is made up of a strong blue, vibrant red, and warm amber. These combined communicate trust, energy, and accessibility. The stripe motif reinforces movement, speed, and direction consistently across applications.

The application ranges from the business side of the museum to fun merchandise and environmental graphics.
